Jazz Music

Jazz music originated in New Orleans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This area was a major port city and a melting pot of cultures. Musicians that came here were exposed to a lot of different music which all came together to form jazz music. It was developed from classical, blues and ragtime roots, and used as a form of musical expression. From the time it originated until modern day, jazz music has become popular music and art, and the sounds of musicians are so different.

Timeline of Jazz Music Events

1910s- Early jazz performers played in various places around the city. Dance bands and marching bands were common for brothels, bars, and funerals.

1920s & 30s – Prohibition and the Roaring 20s brought illicit speakeasies. These venues became lively locations for jazz music. Louis Armstrong, a trumpet player in New Orleans, inspired many people to produce their own jazz music and develop their own style.

1940s- In the early 40s, jazz began to shift from danceable music to more challenging music. This began the rise of bebop and set the standards for today’s jazz musicians.

1950s- A variety of styles were developed including Dixieland, Cool jazz, West Coast jazz, Hard bop, Modal jazz, and Free jazz.

1960s – 1970s - More styles were being produced including Latin Jazz, Post-bop, Soul jazz, and much more.

1980s - Jazz was defined as a unique form of American music when a bill was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. More styles developed including smooth jazz, Punk jazz, M-Base, and more.

1990s - 2000s - A wide range of styles and genres are popular and continue to evolve. The music is so diverse and unique that every artist brings something different to the music industry.
